AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR
Sekhar Kammula churns out a mind game of a thriller. This time around, his so-called “socially-relevant” movie Leader, is a powerful story that revolves around today’s dangerous, diabolic and deadly world of politics. On the one hand he props up a honest and youthful character to become the chief minister and on the other, he makes us believe that if one has to bribe to achieve something good, so be it!
Chief Minister Sanjeevaiah (Suman) is blown up in a landmine blast. He goes into coma leaving his wife Rajeswari (Suhasini) inconsolable. The truth behind the CM’s death and the treachery of the CM’s nephew Dhananjay (Subbaraju) begin to unfold. But then it is the eldest brother of the slain CM, Peddayana (Kota Srinivas), a casteist to the core, who rules the roost.
Leader Movie While Dhananjay and his cronies work overtime, enters Arjun Prasad (RaNa Daggubati), the CM’s son, a businessman who’s done his studies in the US and works for a Fortune 500 company. When the CM regains conscience, he tells Arjun to become the CM and kicks the bucket, thus setting the tone for a gripping drama of brute political clout, ugly display of money and murderous moves.
begins to weaken, the treachery of a politico comes to the fore. Arjun eyes the daughter (Richa Gangopadhyay) of ex-home minister Muniswamy (Ahuti Prasad). He cheats her into falling in love with
him. It is full circle for the young CM who has developed all the traits of a politician. His mother, who wanted him to be a good leader, dies heart broken. He has to shed that image. He resigns and goes to the people — to become a leader. Phew!
Kammula gives a powerful screenplay to make the zigzag political story hit you in the face and in a simple yet lurid manner. Kammula ropes in the ageing Gollapudi Maruti Rao to play the role of a senior MLA to drive home the message when Arjun tells him: “How can you, who has seen Nehru and felt Gandhi, be corrupt?”
Vintage Kammula.

The minus point of the Kammula story is that the story trails off all too sudden leaving the audience in the
lurch. Kammula, remember the viewers always feel satiated with a happy ending. What say? The songs are
mostly Vande Mataram and Eshwar Allah Tero Naam faintly in the background. The background score keeps up the tempo of the racy scenes. There are no beating-round-the-bush-type songs. However, a lovey-dovey song and an item number are best forgotten.

It is not necessary to say who Kammula introduces as hero is RaNa Daggubadi, grandson of veteran producer D. Rama Naidu, son of producer D. Suresh Babu and nephew of superstar Venkatesh. He has also adopted his the first syllable of the two words Rama Naidu — RaNa. Not to forget that RaNa had also produced his very first film in 2006 A Belly full of Dreams, which won him the National Award for the best film. Wow! RaNa stands his ground on his own strengths — a lanky and imposing figure, stylish acting and powerful dialogue delivery. RaNa is here to stay, in acting too. Kammula keeps his protagonist young and youthful. But imagine a CM who smokes and is jean clad. Sounds outlandish. Welcome to 2010.
